It was late July when I caught my first glimpse of the MR Slotcar McLaren F1GTR and, looking at the proposed specification, it was hard not to be as impressed by the features as I was by the looks!
Ernie Mossetti is now nearing the finish line for this, his second 1:32 model. Following up on the successful Mazda 787B, Ernie has hinted that there will be a number of developments to improve the quality and design of his new McLaren: the body will be more durable, and interior elements such as the glass and interior will be optimised for impact resistance.
However, big news is the innovative new front end – the axle support is mounted to the centre of the chassis on four springs, adjustable for tension. With a single axle fitted, you’ll be able to adjust the height as you’d expect – but the clever stuff starts when using two smaller independent axles – now the two front axle supports work just like suspension arms, and the angle of camber on each front wheel becomes fully adjustable.
Initially, the MR Slotcars McLaren F1GTR will be offered as ‘road versions’ in six different colours and referred to as the ‘Contender Series’ cars – but, there are also plans for authentic racing liveries, including the popular Gulf design, to follow in time. With so many different and bright colours being made available, it’s clear that Ernie has aimed the car not only at club racers, but also at clubs in general – the McLaren F1GTR will be the ideal opportunity for a club to make their own fantastic one-make series!
